The story takes place in Montana during the 1930s, otherwise known as the Great Depression. Montana was home to many CCC camps. These CCC camps were organized by President Roosevelt to provide work for the unemployed. The story is enhanced by being placed in Montana because the state contains many vast areas which makes sense with the CCC.
