The CCC* (Roosevelt's Civilian Conservation Corps) employs thousands of men during the Great Depression, including the protagonist, Moss Trawnley.

*CCC: The CCC was Roosevelt's plan to fix the uneployment problem during the Great Depression. They were employed doing public services, such as park maintenance and building parks.

Exposition

Moss Trawnley, a young boy living Texas during the Great Depression just trying to fend for his family gets fired from his job and is forced to find his runaway father in Montana. As Moss arrives in Montana, he finds out his father is a deadbeat who has no urge to  provide and live with his family. Moss realizes that all of his family's needs fall on his shoulders. Moss enters the CCC and starts his new adventure.

Rising Action

As Moss arrives at the CCC camp, he meets many friends that he shares fun times with. However, Moss finds himself in trouble when he becomes entangled in fights with two other men named Klein and Lukowski. DUe to this fighting Moss and his friends are separated to a new project, building a new camp.

Moss is offered the job of the junior leader of their project but chokes and does not think that he can handle the job. Moss here reaches his full point of maturity, which is the main point of the story, to show the process of a boy turning into a man.

Climax

Moss's life has taken a drastic turn thorughout the story. One day working in a train to finally becoming a headman at the CCC and becoming the man that is necessary in life. Moss ultimately went through the greatest adventure, while gaining lifelong friends.
